Pneumocephalus mimicking cerebral cavernous malformations in MR susceptibility-weighted imaging.

چکیده
We read with interest the article by de Souza et al 1 about the use of susceptibilityweighted imaging (SWI) for the evaluation of patients with cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs). In this regard, we would like to report the following case: In November 2008, a 38-year-old woman presented with a history of left tinnitus and hypoacusis. The usual MR imaging sequences showed a left acoustic neurinoma; she also was found to have a single CCM in the left frontal region as an incidental finding. She underwent surgery, and a small CSF fistula presented through the surgical wound as complication. A new MR imaging was performed, adding SWI, showing several lesions that suggested the presence of multiple CCMs (in addition to the frontal cavernous malformation previously diagnosed) that were not seen on the usual sequences (Fig 1).

Susceptibility-weighted imaging in familial cerebral cavernous malformations.
A 59-year-old man with a family history of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) presented with focal seizures. T2*-weighted gradient echo (GRE) images showed multiple lesions consistent with cavernous malformations (figure 1). Susceptibility-weighted images (SWI) detected nearly triple the number of lesions than were seen with the GRE sequence (figure 2). SWI is a relatively new MRI technique...
متن کاملQuantitative Susceptibility Mapping in Cerebral Cavernous Malformations: Clinical Correlations.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Quantitative susceptibility mapping has been shown to assess iron content in cerebral cavernous malformations. In this study, our aim was to correlate lesional iron deposition assessed by quantitative susceptibility mapping with clinical and disease features in patients with cerebral cavernous malformations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients underwent routine clinical scan...
متن کاملSusceptibility-weighted imaging for the evaluation of patients with familial cerebral cavernous malformations: a comparison with t2-weighted fast spin-echo and gradient-echo sequences.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The T2-weighted gradient-echo (GRE) imaging is currently the gold standard MR imaging sequence for the evaluation of patients with cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) lesions. We aimed to compare the sensitivity of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) with T2-weighted fast spin-echo (FSE) and GRE imaging in assigning the number of CCM lesions in patients with the famil...
متن کاملCerebral cavernous malformations: serial magnetic resonance imaging findings in patients with and without gamma knife surgery.
To classify the cerebral cavernous malformations and to investigate the natural history of cavernous malformations according to the classification, 41 patients with 61 cavernous malformations (40 cavernous malformations from 22 patients treated with gamma knife surgery) were regularly followed up using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for a mean period of 25.5 months in treated cavernous malform...
متن کاملSusceptibility - Weighted Imaging for the Evaluation of Large Cavernous Malformation : a case report
Reprint requests to: Dr. Wei-Yu Chen Department of Hematology & Oncology, Chi-Mei Medical Center, Yong-Kang Campus. No. 901, Chung Hwa Road, Yong-Kang, Tainan 710, Taiwan, R.O.C. The diagnosis of a large cavernous malformation may be challenging because its imaging appearance is var iable . Here we reported a 22-year-old man with a large mass in left side temporal lobe. Computed tomography show...
